Clinical knowledge is the core of medicine, but it is not the whole job. A doctor also organizes their own workload, explains decisions to patients and colleagues, and often coordinates a team at a difficult moment. Individual leadership development at Sechenov addresses these demands directly: in the Leaders in Health Innovations program, management and communication skills form a distinct block of the six-year General Medicine degree.<\/p>\n

Self-management comes first<\/h2>\n

Before leading others, a doctor has to manage their own time, priorities and energy. Long shifts and rapidly changing clinical situations call for discipline and self-awareness. The program treats self-management as a professional competency to be trained, not as a personality trait some people simply have.<\/p>\n

Coaching: helping others improve<\/h2>\n

Experienced doctors regularly guide junior colleagues, students and other staff. Coaching skills, such as asking good questions, giving useful feedback and supporting someone’s progress, make that guidance effective rather than merely instructive. Students in the program also experience coaching from the receiving side through their curator and mentors, which shows them what good support looks like in practice.<\/p>\n

Leading teams when the picture is unclear<\/h2>\n

Clinical decisions are often made with incomplete information. One stated aim of the program is to build the ability to make decisions under uncertainty and to lead a team in clinical practice. Communication sits at the center of this: everyone needs to understand the plan, their own role and what changes if the situation shifts.<\/p>\n

How the program builds these skills<\/h2>\n

A dedicated six-year leadership development program runs in parallel with the medical curriculum. Each student follows an individual trajectory for professional and soft skills, supported by small group classes and direct contact with leading faculty. Participation in international conferences and seminars adds practice in scientific communication, while research work teaches students to present and defend their conclusions.<\/p>\n
